Hopes Still Alive for India in ICC World T20 Post One-Run Win against Bangladesh

March 25
12:08 2016

pandyaNew Delhi, Friday, March 25 – It not happens often when outcome of the match is decided on the last ball of the game. Each run in important and this got proved in India vs. Bangladesh match, which held a couple of days ago at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. All seats were fully occupied. The sea of blue was prominent and great to support the home side. Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni went with the same squad he played earlier matches as it was a pressure test.

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Shikhar Dhawan, Yuvraj Singh, , Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ashish Nehra and Jasprit Bumrah were in the team as Dhoni had faith in their abilities. Mashrafe Mortaza, at the same time, picked Tamim Iqbal, Mohammad Mithun, Sabbir Rahman, Shakib Al Hasan, Soumya Sarkar, Mahmudullah, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shuvagata Hom, Al-Amin Hossain and Mustafizur Rahman to play against India – one of the strongest contenders in ICC World T20. Those who sat on bench were Abu Hider, Nurul Hasan, Nasir Hossain and Saqlain Sajib.

The Men in Blue gave what all was possible at that moment to keep their hopes alive in the tournament. Without a win over the Tigers, it wouldn’t have been likely to stay strong in the ongoing series. Bangladesh won the toss and opt to bowl first. The invitation to bat was supposed to be utilized well by Indians but that did not happen, in true sense. Despite the fact that opening duo Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan gave India a good start by playing knocks of 18 runs in 16 balls (4 x 1 and 6 x 1) and 23  runs off 22 balls (4 x 2 and 6 x 1). Mustafizur Rahman gave Bangladesh first breakthrough by dismissing Sharma, spreading silence in the crowd as people wanted more from him. In the very next over, Dhawan got his legs before wicket to Shakib Al Hasan.

Losing two wickets early put India under pressure to a certain extent but Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina were on the crease to introduce some stability. The two players totaled 50 runs together, shifting stress back on the rivals. But hardly anyone knew that dismissals of ‘run machine’ Kohli by Shuvagata Hom at a score of 24 (6 x 1) and Raina by Al-Amin Hossain at 30 runs (4 x 1 and 6 x 2), batting collapse will be suffered soon. It was a tad surprising to see Dhoni sending Hardik Pandya over Yuvraj perhaps he wanted the young gun to rise under immense pressure. The 22-year-old hit a biggie and a couple of fours to attain 15 runs in 7 balls. But a wonderful catch by Soumya Sarkar in Al-Amin Hossain’s over made the youngster go back to the dressing room. Dhoni’s hopes were up from Yuvraj, whose catch was taken by Al-Amin Hossain in Mahmudullah’s over when only three runs were pocketed by him in six deliveries. Two 4s from Ravindra Jadeja definitely gave India much needed push but he couldn’t go far beyond 12 runs.

Ravichandran Ashwin increased some hopes by showing the ball a way towards the boundary. He tried to take a run when Dhoni placed the ball between the gaps but saw a refusal for the same from other end. It was seen on more than a few occasions when Dhoni decided not to take single as he was looking forward to hit a six. However, the ball did not come correctly on bat but still Indian captain was keen and quick to run for two runs. This additional run proved decider of the game. Ashwin was unbeaten at 5 runs while 34-year-old Ranchi man was not out at a score of 13 that comprised a four. After 20 overs, India were all out at 146 runs for the loss of seven wickets. Just three extras were given by Bangladesh that showed immense improvement and sharpness in their bowling skills. Shuvagata Hom, Al-Amin Hossain, Mustafizur Rahman, Shakib Al Hasan, Mahmudullah and Mashrafe Mortaza made Indian batting lineup, which is considered robust and deep, feel the heat.

When Bangladesh came to chase the target, they lost first wicket early in the form of Mohammad Mithun who missed reading the mood of a delivery by Ravichandran Ashwin. The opener scored 1 runs of 3 balls. But then Tamim Iqbal and Sabbir Rahman made sure to do well and take Bangladesh out of danger. Clever stumping by Dhoni was enough to let Iqbal leave at 35 runs (4 x 5) and Rahman at 26 runs (4 x 3 and 6 x 1). Mashrafe Mortaza, the captain of Bangladesh, looked strong when a six was hit by him but Ravindra Jadeja made sure not to give him any room go any further. Hopes were certainly up from Shakib Al Hasan in view of the fact he being one of the experienced players who can do his bit to take Bangladesh towards victory. He played a knock of 22 runs in 15 balls but an awesome catch by Suresh Raina in Ashwin’s over finished his stint. Two timely hit sixes helped his team stay on track and not to lose hopes of winning.

Match started to swing to and fro after Soumya Sarkar’s dismissal at 21 runs (4 x 1 and 6 x 1) when Kohli took a catch in Ashish Nehra’s over. Tension mounted among Indian fans after wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim hit two fours and took a single to get 11 runs. But Pandya managed to give India a wicket that brought the team back in game. Responsibility on the shoulder of Hardik was huge. Many doubted whether this energetic young man may not be able to deliver what was expected from him but he turned the heads. Cheers grew louder when Mahmudullah (18 runs off 22 balls – 4 x 1) also tried to play the glamour shot as like Rahim. Ravindra Jadeja caught the ball on the dot and Rohit Sharma managed not to collide with him that may have changed all statistics. Pandya and all others were elated but Mahmudullah was a shattered man, mulling over his mistake. If he would have tried to go for a single then things could have been totally different. Nehra, Raina and, of course, Dhoni continued to motivate Pandya, who did not try a Yorker in the last delivery.

Dhoni took his gloves off, ready for dismissal. Shuvagata Hom was not out at a zero when ball did not get any edge of his bat but still he with Mustafizur Rahman wanted a single, which could have tied the match and took it to super over. But Dhoni was faster than Rahman and took the bails off on the dot. A run out made India log one-run win over Bangladesh that was vital to think of ranking ahead and increase chances of surviving in the tournament. Dhoni continued to keep his cool that was pivotal. It was visible that he drew each minor detail before the ball was even bowled by his bowlers. Dhoni proved everyone that smartest cricket can be played if brains are used wisely. He seemed thinking a few steps ahead. Natural actions and decisions by him helped his boys think of still being in the game. Captain cool’s captaincy will be remembered for generations to come.

Pandya, all of sudden, became the hero by letting opponents succumb under pressure. Ashwin was given ‘Player of the Match’. If truth be told then India won the match thanks to team efforts, along with some outstanding individual play. After a long time, people got to see something thrilling like this. The match was such which may have caused heart attacks to many. Harbhajan Singh, Mohammed Shami, Pawan Negi and Ajinkya Rahane will have to wait for some more time to find a place in the ‘Playing XI’. Possibilities are high to see Harbhajan bowling against Australia in the game to be held on Sunday given that the track may support spinners.

Some do or die matches are slated to take place today as well. Pakistan’s hopes will get feeble after a defeat at the hands of Australia, who also wouldn’t like to be on the losing side. The team that wins today will earn four crucial two points that may put it ahead of India if net run rate is better. Another important game is to happen between South Africa and West Indies. The Proteas are ranking at no. three with just win of their side.  Despite great efforts against England, they faced defeat which was shattering for them. If West Indies log a triumph on Friday, they will also book a berth in next round as similar to New Zealand. Audience is all set for other big actions that are to start soon after a short span of time. Teams have geared up too. All preparations have at Punjab Cricket Association Stadium and VCA Stadium have been done to successfully host the contests.
